Study: Obesity and diabetes played role in 800,000 cancer cases

With the Holidays near, it’s a good reminder to be mindful of the amount of sugar and sweets you’re intaking. The American Diabetes Association has recommended serious lifestyle changes can help prevent type 2 diabetes, even if you’ve been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Being aware is key to be pro-active with your actions and to take control of your health!

Diabetes and obesity are increasing worldwide, and the researchers in this  study project cancers, particularly those of the gallbladder, liver and endometrium, will increase as well. They suggest that unless diabetes and obesity are much better controlled, the growth in cancers will be significant.

According to a new study, nearly 6 percent of cancers are attributable in part to obesity and diabetes. Researchers found that, diabetes and a B.M.I. above 25 were independent risk factors for 792,600 new cases of cancer.  The study published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, found among the cancers associated with diabetes and high B.M.I. were tumors of the colon, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas.  High B.M.I. and diabetes combined accounted for 38.4 percent of endometrial cancers.  About 16 percent of cancer cases were attributable to high B.M.I. in Western countries.
